2YO BETTING BLOG

Sunday's 2yo Horse Racing (5th May)

If you don't know by now how obsessed I am with 2-year-old horses you'll never know. Despite a few indifferent results with my selections for the Inittowinit weekend bets I'm doing alright so far (kiss of death).

This season is more about value and being a bit more disciplined, that's not to say I'm still not doing stupid bets because a few have slipped through the net and annoyed me.

What am I doing differently this year then? As I said it's all about value and some of these short priced favourites are worth taking on, I mean some are so short on debut you'd have to be insane to back them. We've had 38 2yo races this season so far and 9 favourites have won, yeah trying to find the winner against them is difficult I know but with 10 winners at double figure odds it's fantastic trying to find them. Javee was one for me that I backed at 22s, nice pedigree and decent owner it was well worth a go in a eight runner field with a 2/1 unraced favourite.

Older readers of the blog will know these are not tips just my personal opinion and trackers, I might get a few winners and probably get a few losers but good or bad it will be here.

First thing it's alright identifying my possible bet but the stats have to be right too so more often than not I'll try wait for a nice price and pray my bet is supported, if it drifts out I might get rid with a small loss, now that has gone against me at times when they have still won and drives me mad. A late bet is another I try when the market has settled and sorted itself out but usually the best way for me is to get on when I think it's the right price then as I say pray it's backed.

A few tough races tomorrow.

16.15 Newmarket

I did say to myself last season no more bets at Newmarket as they are always competitive and the two today are no different, I'm sure we'll get a few winners out of these races so it's worth noting them down. The favourite could be anything for Charlie Appleby and with the pedigree I imagine a very nice horse, no value whatsoever, I was looking at Jakarta for Cole and familiar owner Mrs Fitri Hay. Dam Pink Symphony was very nice for Cole and Hay and has produced a family of winners including Highland Chief, I'm just thinking maybe needs a bit further so a slight doubt. The one I'll be hoping drifts to a bit of value is the Karl Burke trained River Seine, the 100,000 euro Soldiers Call filly has plenty of speed in her pedigree, dam Indian Ink was a class act for Richard Hannon senior back in the day, Burke's filly is related to several winners and if drifting to a price I'll get on and hope shes backed or I'll know the outcome.

River Seine 11/2 2nd

16.50 Newmarket

Another tough one and again we all know how good Appleby is so I'm not even bothering talking about his, I'm looking to take them on hoping they have a bad day or need the run.

Tropical Storm for Andrew Balding who has already had a run when looking a bit inexperienced and keen on debut at Newbury last month, easy to back at 17/2 that day. Tropical Storm is related to Purosangue trained by Andrew who is a very nice type winning the Rockingham last year, with the experience under his belt and Murphy on board hopefully he'll be more streetwise today. I'll hold out for a price and hopefully another who needs backing to stand a chance.

Tropical Storm 6/1 2nd

14.40 Salisbury

Convo and Fregola (NR) are both trackers.

Convo 5/2 3rd

14.35 Hamilton

A 3yo tracker has popped up here and I'm not sure what to think about her. Port And Starburd was well-regarded last season by trainer Craig Lidster but has been off the tracker since a promising fourth at Beverley last season. I'll probably watch if I'm honest.

Port And Starburd 33/1 6th

Thanks for reading and always think value, we don't have to bet if the price isn't right.

Saturday's Racing Tips: Inittowinit (4th May)

With the 2yo season a month in it's still early days for me but I've had a few first timeout winners for a change this season, Jayvee being the highlight when winning at Beverley last month. I've got a couple of races to choose from this week with Yarmouth and Thirsk, both look tricky if I'm honest but I'll give the Thirsk race a go.

CraigNewton

13.40 Thirsk -

I have a shortlist of three here.

First is the once raced Al Hussar for the Grant Tuer stable who finished seventh on debut at Wolverhampton last month, a 17/2 shot that day when missing the break but staying on at the finish, related to a couple of winners and not one to write off.

End Of Story is another only because trainer Kevin Ryan does like a winner here.

The one I'm taking a chance on is the 32,000 euro purchase JM Jhingree for John & Sean Quinn. The dam La Pergola ran in France and won over five furlongs also with a bit of cut in the ground. Owners MPs Racing & The Ayrshire Tradesmen 1 had a winner at this course last year with Love Wars for same trainer, sometimes I like to look at little things like that when not much to go on, I think the betting should be the key here, the more support the better but over tens I'd be giving it up. The Dandy Man gelding is bred for speed and is around 14s as I write this, the one that the bookies have shortened is the Middleham Park Loughnane runner Lexington Jet, it's all about value with these early 2yos, if you have seen the results so far this season it's definitely worth taking the favourites on.

4:20 THIRSK -

John Butler is a tricky trainer to call but there’s a good chance this race is seen as a good opportunity for KAARANAH who’s last two runs have caught the eye.

Equally effective on sand and turf, he has good form at this level and better on ground conditions ranging from Good through Soft.

FlatStats show Butler is 0-20 at Thirsk but it’s a small sample and the booking of Oisin Orr is interesting and has a good record here.

Of the others, Golden Melody is consistent and likely thereabouts but seems a little hard to win with.

I’ll likely save on Kynsa who ran well on first run for K P De Foy at Southwell (another eye-catching jockey booking with Callum Rodriguez piloting).

Beylerbeyi ran well stepping up to a mile LTO and a repeat puts him in the mix.

Young Fire has tumbled down the weights but hasn’t shown anything to hint at a return to form as yet.

1.45 Newmarket: Mum's Tipple

Mums Tipple impressed in two of his three runs this year on the sand and suggested the way he finished those races shows that he retains plenty of talent as a now 7-year-old gelding.

He's not the most prolific winner these days, but he could be quite well handicapped in the context of the race, with fitness most likely assured and a handicap mark that may underestimate him.

He drops back to 6 furlongs, which should suit. His best performances have come over this trip and any rain won't be a hindrance to his chances at all. The #1 gate is a question mark - but I hope Ryan Moore in the saddle will make some good decisions early on in a race with not too much pace.

In any case, I must go back to his three runs in 2024, with the most recent one at Kempton catching the eye in no uncertain terms, when runner-up behind smart Mount Athos.

He travelled in rear and wasn't advantaged by a slow pace, being poorly positioned, compared to the winner, who enjoyed an easy race from the front. Mums Tipple made eye catching progress from over 3f out as he finished the final three furlongs fastest, only to be denied by a head in the end.

He pulled too hard in a slowly run race over 7f prior at Wolverhampton but was seriously unfortunate when held up from the widest draw and not getting in clear run while hard held on his seasonal reappearance at Lingfield.

Now a return to turf, off a 97 handicap mark, that offers opportunities. He was competitive off 100 last summer in some hot races and still ran to a 94 speed rating at Ascot.

Key will be the start, though: if slowly away, as he can be, and held up, in a race that may not be run at a furious pace, it's likely a game over there and then. But you trust Ryan Moore to read the pace chart, so I'm hopeful he'll navigate Mums Tipple into a solid position to give the gelding every chance.

16.45 Newmarket EYE OF DUBAI

First past the post and demoted to 2nd last time in a 7f handicap at this course.

He has to take a 4lb rise on the chin but he did an awful lot wrong there from leaving the paddock to the start and in the race itself. He was highly exuberant and very keen so the drop down to 6f looks like a good move.

This is no doubt a much tougher race, up two grades and into a C2 0-100 from that C4 0-80 but he looks like has scope for much more improvement given racing far too keenly LTO, it is testament to him that he clung on and that is also despite the jockey largely riding hands and heels up to the last 100 yards or so. He pulled clear with the runner up who was awarded the race and that one is a highly progressive individual who was more amenable and ridden with cover.

William Buick is a very interesting booking albeit he has only ever had one ride for the yard.

I would definitely say this one is one to follow and because he is still seemingly learning the job, i would suggest he still has easily something left up his sleeve and now he has that all important course experience, he is well worth his place in this line up and it is interesting to me that he takes his chance considering he is still eligible for easier races.

Saturday's Tips: Inittowinit (13th April)

You can't say we aren't consistent anyway as Equinefutures gave us another winner when Auric’s done the business for him at 7/2, hopefully we can get a winner or two again this week.

CraigNewton

No 2-year-olds again for me this week but the trackers are building up and I'm confident I can get a few winners this season.

16.25 Yarmouth 13 April 2024

Fighter Command looks pretty decent for Gosden after finishing second on his debut at Kempton in December. Related to Gosdens Bouquet who won on her 3-year-old seasonal debut and rated 94, be no surprise to see the Dubawi colt go one better here but I don't do things easy, I'll throw what could be a bigger priced dark horse in, I do say could just remember that. EBEN ZAABEEL who made his debut at Newmarket last September, not fancied that day at 18s, the Sea The Stars colt wasn't given a hard time, he was drawn low that day which looked to be a disadvantage with three of the first four all high numbers. This is a step up in trip here and looking at his dam Yazzy who raced middle distance in France at a decent level I don't see why it should be a problem for Eben Zaabeel, I just hope he does himself justice. Trainer Hills thought well of this colt last season and I hope Even kickstarts his 3yo career. I imagine a big price so it will be each way for me personally. I think the betting will be the key here, if well backed I would be more positive but if drifting obviously it's a big negative, you never know but the stats don't speak well if Eben drifts, as I write this Eben Zaabeel is 14s.

710 WOLV - RADIO GOO GOO

A big field but I am not sure there’s much any of them can do if RADIO GOO GOO does what comes naturally here.

It was a terrific effort LTO at Kempton where she did a little too much too soon and the form is strong (Al Barez winning having run better than finishing position previously versus Ferrous, Knebworth & Bosh).

There’s definite potential in some unexposed 3yo’s but they will have to be well forward to beat their senior this time of year.

From the inside trap and likely not much pressure on the lead, Rossa Ryan can pop her out from stall one and control things from the front.

She’ll be hard to pass and may yet to have her finest hour! ….. GL GL!! 🤞🍀🤞🍀🤞

6.00 Yarmouth: BERRY CLEVER

This looks like an ideal opportunity for Berry Clever to get off the mark after a highly promising seasonal reappearance at Southwell recently.

He was significantly hampered soon after the start and couldn’t move closer to the pace as a result, which wasn't ideal in that race. Nonetheless he travelled well into the straight and made initially quite strong progress against the dreaded inside rail.

One can forgive him for getting tired in the closing stages and you would hope he can improve from having this run under his belt, in any case.

Still winless, but the gelding was somewhat ‘unfortunate' in a couple of his runs as a juvenile last season. There is enough in his profile to believe he's capable of winning a race off his current mark. 63 could prove a little bit lenient, now that he also moves up in trip.

On turf, only his second run on grass, and over a mile, which often brings out improvement for Expert Eye offspring, and  dropping slightly in grade too, with De Sousa once again on board, he looks an intriguing horse in an open contest.

The rain is the one question mark I have, if it turns the ground properly soft. It's that lingering doubt I have whether he'll get home in that case. But the pace may not be overly hot, so it's worth the risk.

STONE CIRCLE

Not much to choose from, if I am strict in my discipline and not straying from my set criteria. Anyway, onto this one. He won this race last year on his reappearance and is only 1lb higher this time round. He followed up later on last year over this course and distance, taking his record here to three wins from six starts. It came in a fairly hot C3 handicap and the two behind him are now rated 91 and 94. I don’t think a mark of 75 should really be hindering this guy if he again is ready to rumble straight up. Also intrigued me Michael Bell sends this one to the course and also Hector Crouch ( combo won last year and 21% SR since 2023 ) comes for the one ride. It will be an expensive day out to go home with nothing and suggest they are again going for the prize. Not too fussed about tactics here, he seems versatile enough to race as they see fit on the day. Over the minimum trip, you either go with or go home and with a few question marks hanging over some of these, I do not see why he can’t be getting competitive in this off what again is a handy enough looking mark.

Saturday Selections From Team Inittowinit (6th April)

Racingtictac at least gave us a nice winner last week with Bosh over at Lingfield, we didn't want to peak too early so that will do for week one)

My 2yo selection Additive actually ran a nice debut to finish second staying on nicely at the business end. Nothing for me this week as it's quiet

1:30 KEMP - AURIC 1ST 7/2

There was a lot to like about AURIC’s debut run a few weeks ago at Wolver where he broke well and was dropped in. He wasn’t asked for anything until the home straight when the race was already over but finished the race as well as the winner and should improve for that experience.

There was also a lot to like about Ethandun’s come back run who was slightly cut off by the winner when starting a move forward at the 3 pole; worth a watch as it is  subtle but perhaps shows what can make a difference (happenstance or race winning move by George Rooke 🤔). Ethandun’s momentum is interrupted enough to delay his run and he can’t get competitive however, it does show some promise.

The literal form line (No Half Measures) ties in with the selection however, AURIC gets the nod having what looked like an educational introduction.

Oisin Murphy taking over indicates they mean business today!!!

2.50 Chelmsford - REVERBERATION 4/1 5TH

Veteran Reverberation should have a pretty good chance in this race to land a seventh career victory. Consistent and uncomplicated, he is rather likely to enjoy the run of the race from the front in this field.

Not too many want to go forward. Some of the contenders are prone to miss the break. Hence, the #11 draw may not be a big deal, as Reverberation is a solid starter and should be able to have an uncomplicated way toward the front of the pack.

Off his current mark he's handicapped to go really well, no doubt. He bumped into a highly progressive winner last time, but ran in line with those performances he showed all winter that suggest he's got another win in him off 56, in the right circumstances.

The form of his two wins at Chelmsford over a mile and 10 furlongs back in December and January worked out quite well too, giving his credentials here real substance.

The 5lb claim of red-hot Joe Leavy should come in handy. He seems a good judge of pace and ridden Reverberation last time as well.

The main danger I see most likely in top-weight Lucidity. The light-raced filly could have too much class in this grade, if ready to go on her seasonal reappearance.

However, she was held up in her runs as well, and many in this field seem to prefer a good bit of cover and seeing the back of rivals for most of the race.

The scenario should seriously benefit a consistent in-form horse like Reverberation, who will have no excuses with the run of the race guaranteed, as long as he has a decent start. The fact he drops ever so slightly down in grade is another positive.

Racingtictac

16.55 Kempton KNEBWORTH 3/1 4TH

Here I am continuing my love affair with this horse, there are plenty of reasons to be positive about his chances once again. He is out again fairly quick, only two weeks ago, he won at Doncaster on soft ground. He did have to battle there to get back up but came out last season and won off a seven day break, so proved he can back up a performance. Perhaps also hugely in his favour here is his yards hot streak of form, 9/21 in the last fortnight.

Knebworth bumped into Ferrous on penultimate run ( Wolves ) who opposes again here but does have a 9lb swing in the weights, due to the claimer Ethan Jones again in the saddle this time ( was not on when these two clashed ) so he is weighted to reverse those placings and Ferrous is drawn in eleven which could hinder. Again pointed last time out, he was keen early on in the race and restrained before getting outpaced turning in, second wind kicked in and he came home well there to finish on Ferrous’ quarters. I can see this course ( Kempton ) suiting this one better, with a longer straight to play with, particularly the way again he showed his determination last time at Doncaster where it does take some getting on the straight course, the others to race up on the pace with him dropped away so his performance can be marked up and it was a fairly quick time considering the conditions.

Knebworth should really be getting competitive for me here, carrying only 8st9lb effectively off a mark of 81, yard is in terrific form and drawn in two, ideal for a prominent runner, riding will hopefully be no worry with him getting the trip very well. Drawn next to the obvious pace angle in stall one and that could even be an aid, track him and keep some cover before kicking on ( that guy only 1-25 on AW and appearing to be aiming high here off the mark )

Cheekpieces obviously gave him a lift LTO and he could still have something up his sleeve and there are questions surrounding the others ( decided against including another 100 words on them ) . Hopefully I will get a decent price on the day of the race,  value would of course be key.

Advised bet: Win Trixie: 1ST (7/2), 5TH, 4TH

Good luck.

Friday Selections Team Inittowinit (29th March)

You have to be Inittowinit so here we are back for another try at smashing the bookies, just four normal punters trying our luck, first thing first it's a bit of fun so anyone following don't be going mad.

Equinefutures

13.30 Ling - PARTY ISLAND 9/1 7th

Should be spot on for this following efforts that can be described as both respectable and encouraging here the last two.

Not beaten far at either 1m or 1m2f in two well contested races for the grade, the step up here to 1m4f will be in his favour and I imagine this has been the target.

I must admit I almost choked on my dunked digestive when I saw the draw 16 of 16 however, we are in great hands with George Bass piloting as he knows the horse and rides Lingfield supremely well.

George will have a plan

Please George

Tell me you have a plan 🤞🙏🤞🙏🤞🍀 .. 😄. Obviously it’s competitive with many that can be given a chance but hopefully this element along with the wide berth will give us a decent price GL GL !!

The 2-year-olds have only just started so not much to go on, I'll throw one in anyway.

13.40 Chelmsford ADDICTIVE 6/1 2nd

Dam Dierama won once over six furlongs in her only season racing. Half brother to the Martyn Meade trained Coming Patch who is 97 rated RPH won fto as a 2yo, then finished second in the Irish Bowl Stakes before changing yards. Decent owner in Edward Ware who had success with group winner Poker Face. Pretty hard picking one out until the market tells a story tomorrow but I'll try a newcomer against a few with experience.

Anthropologist trained by Charlie Johnston. Charlie knows the family well with three siblings, dam Yorkindred who won a few times over a couple of years. All siblings ran well on debut, two winners and one second.

Far Above The Law for Haynes, dam didn't do much, this 20,000 euro colt needs a market check.

Sunny Time ran in the Brocklesby, normally a good sign but finished stone last so needs a big improvement.

Tanager for Eve Johnson Houghton, related to two time winner Le Farban and needs support.

Paddy's Courage finished sixth in the Brocklesby for Holland, not sure how good that form is yet.

 2.40 Lingfield: SHOOT TO KILL 12/1 9th

The way the race is likely going to shape, and with his love for the track, Shoot To Kill looks one who may steal this one from the front for Ireland and represents serious value in my mind.

He moved over to Ado McGuinness in early March and ran with plenty of courage in two subsequent starts, both times catching the eye and clearly proving there's plenty of life in the seven-year-old gelding.

Shoot To Kill certainly loves it here at Lingfield. He ran some huge performances from 7-10 furlongs at this venue not too long ago. No doubt, his optimum is a mile over this course and distance, though. He won a class 5 Handicap over this CD back in September off 74, running to a 75 speed rating which he franked weeks later over 7 furlongs at the same venue when finishing a strong third.

That mile win looks better than bare form would suggest, given it was only a class 5. His current mark - 78 - with a 3lb claimer in the saddle, gives him a shout over this course and distance, though.

He won a class 3 Handicaps in the past here, and ran his three career-best speed ratings at Lingfield, the two highest over a mile. Taking into account that he looks to hit some good form, it's not impossible to think he's able to run to that sort of level again.

The pace should favour those who are ridden forward and it's unlikely to be overly hot.

Given that, Shoot To Kill should be easily able to overcome the #7 draw and should find himself in prime position as he slings around the final bend.

Last but not least

15.50 Lingfield BOSH 9/2 1st

The form of his third last time out at Wolves received a boost on the weekend with Knebworth winning. He remains on the same mark here of 90 and that is only 2lb higher than when he won three starts ago at Chelmsford so he is weighted to go well, only giving out late on subsequently over 7f here off this mark too. The winner, third and fourth have won since, including a further subsequent placing at listed level for the winner and Bosh conceded him 8lb there.

First of all has a nice draw in three which should suit him, in order to get a prominent sit coming into the bend. Last time he had to work pretty hard to get up with the pace from stall 10 and in doing so he covered the equivalent of a length to a length and a quarter more than the two in front of him, despite being on the inside coming to the turn. So in theory he will have less to do as early as he did in that race.

Looks like a strong pace will be on but I don’t think that is a concern given his last win came off a solid pace, tracked the pace in fourth and stayed on well to win so this scenario will definitely suit him given he can track the pace from that handy draw, he is a strong traveller but also gets this trip very well. I would like to think he has every chance of getting competitive here in this.

Advised bet each way lucky 15.

RESULT: 7TH, 2ND (6/1), 9TH, 1ST (9/2)

Good luck and thanks for reading.

URSA MAJOR RACING-FLAT HORSES TO LOOK OUT FOR IN 2024

In 2018, a group of like-minded individuals, led by Craig Talbot, decided to take their passion for horse racing to the next level and purchase their very own horse, Cape Hideaway, trained by Mark Walford giving birth to the URSA Major Racing Club.

Cape Hideaway won first time out, and now in 2024, and over 50 winners later (including 26 in 2023), URSA have around 30 horses in training under both codes, with trainers in Scotland, the North and South of England.

The club was founded on the principle of affordable racing for everyone. As Racing Manager and Owner, Craig buys what he considers to be good value horses, at affordable prices, and sells shares as near to cost as possible with industry low monthly training fees.

Communication is another key feature of the club. trainers are encouraged to communicate as often as possible. Not only do you know about your own horse (dedicated WhatsApp or Telegram channels), but there are also general chat channel where general updates/messages/videos are shared for everyone. Raceday experience is also key with videos of the horse/trainer/jockey before and after racing shared for those owners who cant make it.

Now the club is established, Craig’s mantra is to improve the quality of horses in both the Flat and National Hunt strings, in an affordable way. Here is a list of the URSA Flat horses to look out for in 2024 in the famous Battenburg colours. We feel that is the best quality string we have ever had and are massively looking forward to the start of the season.

2 year olds

Angel at Midnight (2yo g f) trained by Mike Murphy and Michael Keady

Angel was bought at Tattersalls Book 3 Sale last year. She is probably has the best pedigree of any horse URSA has owned. Her mother was rated 104 and won the Sweet Solera Stakes as a 2yo. She’s not the biggest, which is probably why we were able to afford her (she’s by Dark Angel)... We’ve had a lot of success with Mike and Michael, and although she’s a May foal, she’s coming to hand a bit quicker than we thought. She very much looks like she’ll be a 2yo and she’ll start off over 5f and we will go from there.

Baby Rover (2yo b f) Trained by Katie Scott

This filly is a full sister to Curious Rover, also trained by Katie. More about him later. I saw an article produced by a well known racing publication describing Katie as ‘an up and coming trainer’. Well, we’ve known this for a while which is why she’s got a lot of our flat horses up at Lindean in the beautiful Scottish Borders.

Her sire is a No Nay Never colt called the Irish Rover, who stands at Sweeps Lane Stud in Ireland. He literally has a handful of runners in training. She’s probably the least forward of the URSA 2yo’s, and she won’t be rushed, so she may not be out until May. We’re hoping she’s as good as her brother, and we’re very excited about her future.

Mali and Me ( 2yo b f) Trained by Michael Dods

Michael is a new trainer for us this year, but obviously he’s very well established and needs no introduction. He bought this filly over in Ireland. Her sire Sands of Mali was a very quick horse. He’s a first season sire, and it will be interesting to see how he does. At the few sales I was at this year, I liked his stock, and whilst all the buzz and chatter is about other maybe more fashionable sires from bigger farms, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did well with his runners.

This filly has grown tremendously over the last couple of months, into a tall and strong filly. She’s in full work, which will be gradually stepped up, and we hope we see her in May. She’ll start off over 5f.

Starspangledsox (2yo ch f) Trained by Katie Scott

This filly is a chestnut by Starspangledbanner, who has 4 white socks (hence her name). She was bought at Tattersalls Book 3. URSA had her half-sister, who always worked well at home, but sadly didn’t show it on the racecourse. She was on the list of possibles for the sales, but I think she blew us all away looks wise when we saw her.

She’s a much bigger and stronger model than her half-sister. Katie really liked her, and so it was easy to find a trainer for her. Her pedigree does not scream early 2yo (she’s out of a Camelot mare), but she really has taken everything in her stride, and just continues to plough through her education without much fuss. She went for a racecourse gallop recently and again took it all very professionally.

At the time of writing she is our most forward 2yo, and we may even see her on track in March. With her size I’d be surprised if she doesn’t have a 3yo career in front of her, so hopefully not just an early 2yo type.

3 year olds

Curious Rover (3yo b g) Trained by Katie Scott

An inspired purchase by Craig to stay in the stable, he was the highest rated 2 yo trained in Scotland last year (Rated 88). He did nothing but improve last year. He won his maiden at Catterick then, didn’t finish out of the frame in the rest of his starts including a great win in a Class 2 at Haydock, and then just got touched off in another hot race at York.

He’s done very well over the Winter, the gelding will help him concentrate on the job at hand, and we are very much looking forward to his 3yo career. He looks like an out and out 5f horse. The dream would be black type for him, and an early season target would be something like the 3yo dash at Epsom at The Derby Meeting. He’s ground versatile, it seems, and acts on the all-weather, so we have lots of options for him throughout the season.

Sassy Glory ( 3 yo b f) Trained by Mark Walford)

A very recent addition to the club, Sassy Glory is in the early stages of her pre-season build up, with our founding trainer Mark Walford in Sherrif Hutton.

The filly is a big, scopey, type by the legendary sire Oasis Dream (I can remember watching him win the Nunthorpe and July Cup in the day, boy he was quick). She is quite lowly handicapped after having 3 runs last year, but she was a big weak two year old, and has grown into her frame a bit more this year.

We are hoping to have some fun with her and she will hopefully start off in May.

Older Horses

Champagne Sarah (4 yo ch f) Trained by Mike Murphy and Michael Keady.

Sarah is a filly very close to my heart. I was at Tatts when Craig bought her at Book 3. We all loved her. Two other lads who were with us loved her too, they have shares in her as well-in fact she’s called after one of their wives!. We thought we’d missed out as we had underbid her, but we found out shortly afterwards she was a buyback. Mike and Michael did a deal for her, and I was having a curry when Craig messaged me to say we got her! It tasted better after that!

She has been fantastic for the club and her owners. She won a nursery as a 2yo, and then two handicaps at Newbury and Yarmouth. She loves to be sat out the back and kick in the last two furlongs. That’s both exciting and frustrating at times, as she needs those gaps to open. Sarah is ultra consistent though, rarely out of the first 4, and in many ways she’s a perfect syndicate horse.

This year as a 4yo she’s grown a little and strengthened. Her lass loves her, and she is delighted with her, as are Mike and Michael. The dream would be to nick some black type with her this year. She loves fast ground, and we are aiming to start off at Windsor over 6f, ground permitting, next month, and then hopefully she’ll be a Saturday horse (or maybe a Sunday Series one too) she’s rated 80. Cant wait to see how she gets on this year.

The Turpinator (7 yo b g) Trained by Grant Tuer

Another bargain buy by the boss at the HIT sales, ‘Turps’ has a band of loyal owners, and he’s taken them to some big courses, and given them some great days out over the last year and a bit. He runs plenty this lad, and again is versatile at trip, and ground, and also acts on the all-weather.

He won twice last year at Thirsk and Newcastle. But he also ran plenty of good races in defeat, including a cracking third in a good race at York, and the same in a better race at Ripon. He’s tough and consistent, and Grant has done well with him.

Expect to see him anywhere between 6f and a mile on the turf and AW. He’s another Saturday Horse (Rated 84) and hopefully he will get a few more breaks this year, and add to his wins for his owners and the club.

May Blossom (5 yo b m) Trained by Julie Camacho

Julie is another new trainer for the club this year. She had a wonderful year last year of course, but she’d been doing a brilliant job for many years beforehand, without the marquee winner she had in Shaquille last year. Husband and assistant Steve is a fantastic horseman, and Craig was delighted when they said they’d have a horse with the club.

Steve and Craig bought May Blossom at the HIT sales. Another horse who’s is rated over 80, she’s again perfect for a syndicate in that she runs plenty to a high level, and is pretty ground versatile (although she would prefer some cut). She’ll run over 5 and 6f, and she’s coming to hand pretty quickly at home, so expect to see her in April somewhere on the turf. Steve loves her already as she’s the sweetest filly and she’s very straightforward.

This is the sort of horse that Julie and Steve do well with, so we are hoping they can squeeze a few extra pounds out for us.

Kalganov ( 5 yo b g) Trained by Michael Dods

Another HIT sales purchase with Michael, he was originally bought to run on the all-weather over the winter. Well, he won his race at Newcastle nicely, and ran well on other occasions.

He’s an interesting horse, as he got some black type in France as a 3yo, and whilst he might not reach those heights now as a 5 year old, he’s a very solid performer. He’s had a few weeks off after his busy campaign over the Winter, but Michael will freshen him up, and he’ll be back on the turf. We’d expect him to give his owners lots of fun over 6 and 7 furlongs through the summer, and he will hopefully nick another win or two before the season is out.

Clarehaven Ten To Follow 2024

I would like to thank David for taking the time to detail this year's 10 To Follow from the juggernaut that is Clarehaven Stables, John & Thady Gosden. You can follow David Pidduck on Twitter @DarReMi. Excellent work, as always.

Firstly, a quick Review of 2023’s List. We found the Betfred Oaks winner (Soul Sister) and a Royal Ascot winner (Coppice) amongst them. Combined they ran 58 times, winning 14 (24%) and producing a LSP of +£7.35.

For reference, here are his 2022 Clarehaven 10 To Follow

So, the usual rules apply – 3yo’s can only have ran NO MORE THAN ONCE. I have added 4yo’s this year (regretting not flagging up COURAGE MON AMI in last year’s list). These older horses can’t have ran more than twice.

This homebred Kingman filly won her 1mPoly Kempton maiden beating Izipizi. Described by Matt Chapman as a “big, lovely type”, John himself called her a “big rangy filly”. John attended that meeting on a mid-December Wednesday primarily for her (although she was withdrawn two weeks before after being restless in the stalls).

She will start at 10f and has been given a Prix De Diane entry.

2) LAUTREC -1

This colt was a rare purchase by Juddmonte and is a half to St Mark’s Basilica and Magna Grecia. I know he is well thought of, he won his 1mTap Newcastle maiden despite greenness and he looked tall and unfurnished. He can only improve and if he fills out over winter he could be very good. Early signs are promising as he has been given a Prix Du Jockey Club entry.

3) MUTAAWID unraced

This Shadwell homebred is full brother to Mostahdaf, and a half to Nazeef and Mostabshir. Well thought of at Clarehaven, he had a problem at two but has returned to training recently. Mostahdaf and Nazeef didn’t run as juveniles and were highly progressive with racing and age and hopefully Mutaawid can follow in their hoofprints.

I would ask anyone reading this to watch his only start of his juvenile career, as after watching, you will see why he has to be on this list. An EYECATCHING debut run over 1mPoly at Kempton in early December, he has been given a Prix Du Jockey Club entry and that suggests he has gone the right way over the winter.

John and Thady know the family very well and this well-bred George Strawbridge filly ran a reasonable debut effort at HQ over 7Hy in November. Kieran Shoemark said afterwards that she is a nice filly going forward who just got tired.

The dam has produced two winners from two so far, both with RPR’s in the mid-80’s. I think being sired by Sea The Stars, she has scope over further than both her racing siblings (best over 10f) and Journey, her dam, improved considerably with age.

6) SWORD -4

This Book 1 purchase by David Redvers is well thought of by many people connected to this colt. He was given one of the strong names Qatar Racing reserve for horse’s they feel have the best chance to do the name justice.

He ran with promise on his debut over 1mPoly Kempton in mid-November finished 4th. John & Oisin were on duty at this Wednesday evening. He has been given a Prix Du Jockey Club entry.

7) TEN DIMES -2

This 600,000 Gns Book 1 purchase had worked better than the promising Beeley, in a mid-October gallop, before making her debut in mid-November. Running well in a 7Tap Newcastle Novice with Rab, she was always thought of more of a next year horse. She is another with a French Classic entry, in her case the Prix De Diane.

8) DOLCE COURAGE (4YO) -11-

Unraced at two, and gelded in April of his 3yo season, he was two from two last October and has already got a handicap mark of 89. He has had a similar patiently handled campaign as did the same owner’s Courage Mon Ami. He could be anything, from a decent handicapper to a pattern performer.

9) MAHBOOB (4YO)-1-

Gelded in the September of his 3yo season, he made debut last December and won a 1m2Poly Lingfield Novice with Jim Crowley showing two turns of foot. He the potential to improve further being by Sea The Stars and he had a Derby entry until the six day stage (was still entered 4th April 3yo career).

He must be well thought of otherwise he could easily have been entered in one of the Horse’s In Training Sales last year, but that wasn’t the case, despite his issues (didn’t run at two, gelded).

10) QUEEN OF THE PRIDE (4YO) -81-

Well thought of by David Redvers, she was originally sent to Ralph Beckett. Sent to Clarehaven in late August of her 2yo season, she ran twice as a 3yo, winning her second start with a RPR of 83. The placed horses are now OR’ed 96 and 92. Unraced over further than 10f, her dam won the St Leger and she is sired by the late Roaring Lion, so you can be certain that Qatar Racing want to do the very best they can with a filly this well bred.

WORTH A MENTION, just missing the 10 to follow cut.

DIVINE PRESENCE -4 Ran once at Lingfield with Kieran O’Neill over 7Poly, she was slow away, green and hampered in her run up the straight at least twice. The fact that she has been given a Prix De Diane entry peaked my interest and the same owners Star Of Seville started her career with an average debut run before winning the mentioned Classic in 2015.

FIREBLADE unraced

This homebred is Cracksman’s full brother and is named after Sir Anthony’s family aviation business in South Africa apparently! He didn’t make it to Clarehaven until September last year which would help to explain why he hasn’t run yet.

Bred by The late Queen, Rab Havlin, before his debut run over 1mTap at Newcastle said “He is big, raw and we quite like him. He will be a mile and a quarter horse next year.”

He looked a fine physical specimen when I saw him in May and those looks certainly held true in December. Another pointer was the fact that the Novice he ran in is a race John & Thady had won four times since 2018, most notably with Without Parole.

She is a well related Qatar homebred who won her only start in early December with Osin over 1mPoly. She is a lovely tall type with scope who will get 10f in time. Oisin was impressed with her on that start and she is sired by Kingman.

MONYAT GALBY unraced

She is named, apparently, after an expensive handbag brand and is extremely well bred and must have had the looks as she cost over 1m Guineas at Book 1. Shadwell are certainly on the up again in recent seasons and this filly has the potential to be smart over 8-10f.

This Bjorn Neilsen homebred ran with promise in a November 1mPoly Lingfield Novice, finishing second. He has been given a Prix Du Jockey Club entry.
